Toby & Pete: Knights in Shining Armor

Aussie duo contributes to ADC 95th Annual Awards campaign

The ADC 95th Annual Awards are here! Yes, the Call for Entries for one of the oldest and most respected industry award shows in the world has been launched, with the help of BBDO New York‘s “Rare For A Reason” campaign, featuring beautifully designed ads which highlight just how uncommon it is to win a top honor.

To create the campaign, BBDO New York tapped into the talents of various artists from around the world. We at ADC love to shine the spotlight on creative talent, and so we will be featuring the artists throughout the Call for Entries season.

Next up: a Sydney-based designer duo with a “hyper-real aesthetic.”

T and or PTOBY & PETE

Sydney, Australia

What’s your origin story? How did the two of you become a team?

We met each other whilst working for a print post-production company in Sydney. We briefly parted ways to pursue ventures in art direction, only to reconvene a few years later as collaborating designers. Next thing we knew we were so busy we decided to make the relationship formal and we launched T&P in late 2010.

How would you describe the kind of work you do?

Our work spans multiple disciplines, but we guess the consistency comes down to a hyper-real aesthetic, regardless of the visual medium.

Walk us through this project.

BBDO did give us a fairly strong direction along with the factoid. Our brief was to create the message in medieval armour, however the overall design was up to us. We did our research and sketched up some ideas. Our piece was initially illustrated by hand and then finally realised in CGI.

In the end, one word best describes it: ** Shiny! **

What’s on the horizon for you in terms of other projects?

It’s always changing for us. Every brief is so different from the last. These days almost every brief comes with a motion component, so we guess we’re extending our skill set further into time based mediums.

Compare winning an ADC Cube versus being knighted by the queen.

Being knighted feels a little old school. But then again, the ‘Sir’ title is pretty awesome. Perhaps ADC needs some kind of official title to go along with the Cube?

The ADC 95th Annual Awards Call for Entries is now open.
