Super Sketching Power Unleashed At Dare2Draw

On Thursday, ADC opened its doors for the first time to Dare2Draw, a mentoring and networking group that encourages comic book artists and enthusiasts to get together face-to-face for support, inspiration, and fun. Dare2Draw events have quite the following in New York City because of their great speakers and exciting contests, and this event was no different.

As people reached the end of the long line to enter the gallery, they got right down to the business of the evening: drawing. All eyes were on the models posing for a Quick Draw session and contest as professional illustrators and amateur enthusiasts alike pulled up chairs to hone their craft and take a shot at the awesome prizes to be won.

Guest of Honor Bill Sienkiewicz did a live drawing demo using several guests as live models and talked candidly about a career in comics. “Some of you might be asking yourself whether you’re an artist or not,” he challenged. “I feel like if you have to ask that question, then you’re not.”

Special guest Shane Davis gave the audience a glimpse into his work on Superman in a lesson on storytelling. Comparing a comic book to a musical composition with high and low notes, he told the crowd that “you always need to think about the next frame” to have a successful story.

Fans of Amy Reeder’s new comic Rocketgirl were enthralled by her live demonstration and Q&A.

With everyone’s hands sufficiently cramped, the Quick Draw contest winners were announced. First prize was a Wacom tablet, a $100 gift certificate to Jerry’s Artarama, 1 month free membership at New York Sports Club, a package from Sakura, and more. Second and third prizes as well as an honorable mention went home with great swag, too.

It was a great night to pick up a pencil, a drink, and great tips and advice from some of the most well respected artists in the comic book industry. If you missed it, visit Dare2Draw to stay updated about their upcoming events.
