ADC Young Guns 7 winner Stewart Smith was recently interviewed by Afterword about the role of technology in the arts. “As a species we’re tool makers. We use these tools we surround ourselves with to make things, including art. 30,000 years ago we used primitive paints to draw animals in caves. That was absolutely high technology for the time. Now we write ridiculous captions on JPEGs of kittens and post them on social networks. (And somewhere in between those two points in history being a good photographer included being an amateur chemist.) The technology may change but the role of technology does not. We simply use the tools around us to make things and mastering those tools allows for greater articulation,” Stewart said. Read the full interview here.
