Great Expectations: Judging the ADC Annual Awards
ADC 95th Annual Awards Jury open up about what they're looking for.
While winning a coveted Cube at the ADC 95th Annual Awards is an extremely rare honor, judging said awards — being among those who select the prestigious winners — well that’s an honor unto itself.
Ahead of the judging of the very best in advertising, design, illustration, photography, digital and motion, we asked this year’s jury what they hope to get out of this responsibility and experience.
“Inspiration. I cannot wait to be exposed to a) work I haven’t seen before (hopefully that will happen) and b) people I don’t know or haven’t seen in a long time, and the conversations we’ll get to have. To me, there’s nothing better than that.”
Jodi Terwilliger
Creative Director, HUSH (USA)
Motion Jury
“I’m most looking forward to drowning in a swirling sea of work and conversation and then emerging, Ursula Andres style, with renewed clarity, insight and a gang of new buddies.”
Sarah Watson
Chief Strategy Officer, BBH New York (USA)
Advertising Jury
“It’s rare to have the chance to look at the greatest creative work internationally all at once. It will be very interesting to understand and compare the inspirations, cultural backgrounds, difficulties and definitions of success from different parts of the world.”
Tim Ho
Partner & Creative Director, Constant (China)
Digital Jury
“It’s always such a buzz to be surrounded by both the best minds and the best work in the industry. Not only does it make for thought-provoking, insightful conversation, but it serves as inspiration to take away with me after the judging is done. The reason i think we get into this industry is all about inspiring ideas. And i expect to see a lot of them at ADC this year.”
Stefanie DiGianvincenzo
Creative Director, AKQA (Australia)
Digital Jury
“I am most looking forward to see work that questions current trends, something out of the norm, aesthetically perfect while not hesitating to explore uncharted waters. It’s amazing to see work from all over the world, to see cultural differences, different communication styles and different ways of art expression.”
Andreas Kioroglou
Founder, Creative Director, Matadog Design (Greece)
Design Jury
“I have no doubt that the work will be spectacular, but what’s more exciting for me is seeing it from different perspectives. Discussing it with other judges and debating what’s worthy of a Gold or Black Cube. That’s when you learn. And that’s what I’m looking forward to.”
Nkanyezi Masango
Creative Director, Y&R Cape Town (South Africa)
Advertising Jury
“What better and more inspirational situation than to be amongst all the ingenuity of the past year gathered under one roof? I’m looking forward to meeting the fellow jurors and exchanging thoughts regarding the submissions, as well as discussing the state of our industry and how it may be reflected in the work submitted.”
Nathalie Kirsheh
Design Director, Details magazine (USA)
Design Jury
“I look forward to discovering out of the box but not the “official out of the box” campaigns, incredibly well crafted works, truly insighful ideas, and no politics.”
Anne-Cécile Tauleigne
Executive Creative Director, JWT Paris (France)
Advertising Jury
“I’m going to be in company of some of the industry’s most talented and dynamic people, some of whose work I’m in love with. While I can’t wait to see the very best of the past year’s creative work, I’m looking forward to meeting other judges, getting to know them and their distinctive points of views.”
Shirin Johari
Founder and Creative Head, Clap Global (India)
Advertising Jury
“It’s always good to get a different perspective on the year’s best work, to really be able to dissect and scrutinize it with people you respect in the industry. It really helps to elevate your own work and the choices you make.”
Nick Davidge
Executive Creative Director, Co-founder, GreenLight (USA)
Advertising Jury
“Coming from a small creative island on the edge of Europe, it’s always good to travel, see international work and benchmark Ireland’s standing on the global design stage… The ADC Annual Awards will be an opportunity to forge international links and connections — I’m looking forward to meeting the other jury members and discussing developments across the rapidly changing discipline of visual communication.”
Conor Clarke
Director, Design Factory (Ireland)
Design Jury
