Typography East Meets West takes place on October 14th from 6:30 to 9:30 at the ADC Gallery. This fascinating speakers’ panel will discuss the similarities and differences between working with Eastern and Western font systems. Typography: East Meets West is presented by ADC, Hanyi Fonts and Fasheng, two major design companies based in Shanghai, and supported by Monotype.
This panel discussion will feature two New York based typographers, and one up and coming typographer from China. Drinks will also be served.
Xuan Zhang represents Hanyi, a type design and technology company headquartered in Shanghai. He received his Bachelor of Architecture at Tsinghua University in 2010. In 2012, he earned his MFA of Graphic Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. His postgraduate study was in graphic design where he studied typesetting from Professor Bruce Ian Meader and brand design from Professor Lorrie Frear. His biggest passion, however, is type design, where he also had the privilege to study with Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes. Since then, he has participated in several China Font design project, and GoSMS Western Font Design (including Elgatino, Toshiyana, PaRADOS, Basileia, Mithril, Rayna, and Nouveau).
Dan Rhatigan is a typeface designer and consultant here in New York. Until recently, he was a Type Director at Monotype, working on custom type development projects and strategy for Monotype’s font libraries. Over the years he has also taught graphic design, typography, and branding at schools including the City College of New York, the University of Reading in the UK, and the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in the Netherlands.
Bonnie Siegler is an award-winning graphic designer and member of the inaugural class of ADC Young Guns. She is the founder of Eight and a Half, a multidisciplinary design studio, and before that, co-founded Number Seventeen. She served as the chair of the 2013 AIGA National Design Conference, was the 2014 Koopman Distinguished Chair in the Visual Arts at the University of Hartford, and has taught in the graduate design programs at RISD, Yale, and the School of Visual Arts. Bonnie’s work is in the permanent design archives of AIGA and has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, Type Directors Club, and the Society of Publication Design, among others. Bonnie also has a regular advice column on Design Observer where she responds to readers’ questions (submit yours to firstname.lastname@example.org ) Her clients include Participant Media, HBO, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Saturday Night Live, Brooklyn Public Library, The Criterion Collection, Random House, and The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.
Mitch Paone is the creative director and founder of the New York–based brand consultancy DIA. He is also a winner of ADC Young Guns 8. Beyond his commercial career, Paone is an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts, moonlight type designer, and the pianist and bandleader of the jazz-fusion group Non-Static.
