Multiple Honors

For Photoshop’s 25-year anniversary, we wanted to make something special. We wanted to make a video made entirely with Photoshop files and their layers. We began by curating artwork from Behance, Adobe’s creative community of four million people. Over 100 artists—selected on the basis of how they used Photoshop in breakthrough ways to express creativity—contributed their PSD files. All the animation was based only on the layers garnered. The files were deconstructed, animated layer by layer and sequenced into an animation synced up with the lyrics to Aerosmith’s iconic song “Dream On.” The process took three weeks and used over 3,500 layers. Photoshop artists helped by organizing layers, making adjustments and preparing images. Working 100 percent in-house at the agency, we employed frame-based 2-D animation and compositing using Adobe’s own software to bring the art to life. The final product was not only a video but also a PSD file. And vice versa.
